What are the Most Popular Types of Monstera Species?

One of the most popular houseplants is the monstera plant. With large leaves, this plant is very easy to care for. But did you know that there are in fact many different verities of monstera plant?

There are 48 different monster species, with each plant being different in color, size, and cut pattern. This article highlights the most popular types of monstera species that can be bought in shops around the world.

These plants are typically incorrectly named because young monstera plants can look completely different from the adult version. Although who really cares, if the plant looks great, then it looks great, the name doesn’t matter too much.

Monstera Deliciosa

The monstera deliciosa is the most common variety of monstera plant. This is the one you see in shops and homes around the world. The plant is famous for its huge leaves with deep cuts. In fact, the look has found its way onto pieces of print artwork, which shows just how loved this plant is. The term “deliciosa” was given because the plant produces Mexican breadfruit.

Monstera Borsigiana

The monstera borsigiana is a variation of the deliciosa plant. In fact, they are commonly mistaken and sold under the same name.

One of the only differences between the monstera deliciosa and the monstera borsigiana is on the bottom of the stem. The delicioasas has small bumps on the stem, but the borsigiana doesn’t.

The borsigiana is a smaller plant, which is why it is easier to distinguish when the plant has fully grown. The leaf cuts are also very ordered, instead of in random places.

Monstera Adansonii

The adansonii is like the deliciosa, but a lot smaller. This is one of my favorite plans as it is just so cute. It can be hung in a hanging basket or grown in a small pot for your desk.

Although small in size, the leaves have huge holes that take up over 50% of the leaf. These cuts make the adansonii one of the most unique house plants on the market.

Monstera Variegata

The variegata is a color variation of the standard monstera species. Basically, it’s like taking your monstera deliciosa, and then dipping it into a pot of white paint. These are super-attractive plants. As such, the variegate is both expensive and hard to find.

Monstera Dubia

This is such a cute variety of the monstera plant! It features tiny heart-shaped leaves with dark green accents. The plant grows like a vine plant, which means it is grown around poles and other vertical objects. The plant can be hard to find, and when you do find it, the retailer charges a high price.

Monstera Pinnatipartita

The pinnatipartita has huge leaves that are glossy. These leaves also have smaller slits, rather than the holes you commonly see on monstera plants. The plant features stiff stems that results in a beautiful, yet durable houseplant.

Monstera Siltepecana

The siltepecana features teardrop-shaped leaves with minimal holes and cuttings. The solid leaves tend to be lighter in the middle, and darker on the outside of the leaves. Again, these are hard to find.

Rhaphidophora Tetrasperma

Technically, this isn’t a monstera species, although we are included it in this list because this plant is often called the mini monstera.

The plant is often called this due to the characteristic monstera leaf shape and cuttings. Unlike the other plants in this guide, the mini monstera is easy to buy from a number of vendors. This is a great plant for any lover of houseplants.

Monstera Obliqua

Unfortunately, this is another rare plant that won’t be found in your local store. However, just look at its beauty…

The oblique has huge leaves with some of the biggest holes you will see on any plant. In fact, the holes make up the majority of the leaf, so this is a very delicate plant.
